Thatch is the layer of dead grass and roots that builds up between the soil and the green blades. A thin layer is normal, but too much keeps water, air and nutrients from reaching the roots and leaves the lawn thin and patchy.
Dethatching removes that buildup so your lawn can take in water and fertilizer and fill back in with thicker growth. We collect and haul away the thatch when the job is done, and dethatching is included once a year in our Premium lawn care plan.

When thatch builds up to an inch or more, it acts like a sponge on top of the soil. Water and nutrients get trapped in the thatch instead of reaching the roots, so roots stay short and the lawn struggles in heat and dry spells.
A healthy layer is half an inch or less. Water soaks straight into the soil, nutrients reach the roots, and the grass grows deeper roots and a thicker, greener lawn.
Dethatching brings the layer back to a healthy level, so your watering and fertilization actually work.
